Third Verse
âReady?â the Heretic asked.
Kid nodded and the mind transfer began. It was an unusual sensation. Thoughts, sounds, visions, and memories began to flood Kid's brain. Is this what computers feel like when they download a file? Kid wondered.
The process took several minutes and as it wound down, a smile came to Kid's lips. Pushing was beautiful. A subtle dance between potential and kinetic energy. Kid saw how he could have stumbled with learning the basic skills over weeks and months, but with the Hereticâs mind to mind transfer, Kid learned the basic skill almost instantly and with the added bonus of a lifetime's experience from his teacher.
âLet's go to the range,â the Heretic said. He jumped them out into the desert. A short cliff face stood in front of them about 20 yards away. Large bullseyes were drawn on the stone in something that resembled chalk.
Kid looked expectantly at the older man. His teacher merely shrugged as if to say, what are you looking at me for?
Kid looked at a pile of fist-sized stones and ran through the protocol heâd received from the Heretic. First, locate the object in the flux field. He found the pile and then selected one of the individual rocks.
Second, transfer the needed energy to lift the rock. Kid found this part a little like trying to wiggle his toes when his foot had fallen asleep. After a few moments of effort, he was rewarded with a strange sensation as the rock lifted off the ground, shooting upward, high overhead.
In his elation, Kid lost track of the rock and covered up from the impending projectile speeding down toward earth.
The Heretic laughed. âHave another go.â He held up his index finger and thumb in a pinch. âLittle less this time.â
Kid smiled and tried again. The sensation was exhilarating, feeling this foreign power coursing through his veins. He lifted the rock and again it shot up overhead, but this time he backed off the power and kept the rock fixed firmly in his mind. He played with the ratio needed to hold the rock in place without rising or falling. Once he had a feel for it, Kid began playing around with it, elevating it a few feet then dropping it almost completely.
Kid looked at the targeted wall of stone and tried to send the rock flying toward it. The rock accelerated like a major league fastball and smashed into the rock face several meters above the target.
Disappointed, Kid tried again with a similar result. This time, the shot landed low. He tried again. And again. Each time, no matter how hard he tried to will the rock to strike within the targetâs rings, he was met with failure.
Finally, in desperation, he turned to the Heretic. âWhat am I doing wrong?â
âYouâre missing,â the teacher replied.
âYes, I got that part. Any tips on how not to miss?â
âYouâre thinking as if youâre throwing the rock at a target. Instead, find your target in the flux, and connect them.â
âWhat the hell does that mean? How do I connect them?â
The Heretic only shrugged in reply.
